BasilHealth’s Take On Our Basil Julep + A Mocktail

I love when someone puts their spin on one of my drinks- this time my girl Juli Novotny, creator of Pure Mamas and BasilHealth‘s health and lifestyle journalist whipped up the Basil Julep from my collection, The Best Craft Cocktails. Juli decided to add mint and blackberries to her drink. Considering how hot it still is here in SoCal, we say break out the julep cups and stir up their version this weekend! If you’re opting out on whiskey, sub in Pau D’Arco, Lapsang Souchang, or Yerba Mate tea! Photo by Juli Novotny Advertisements

Happy Fall Equinox Although It’s Almost 90 Degrees

84, 82, 91, 81, 90… Hardly feels like fall equinox here in SoCal. The vacationers have gone back to wherever they’re from while the locals are quickly reclaiming the beach and waves. There is little other visual evidence that fall has arrived. No Uggs, no pumpkin spice lattes, no changing leaves, no rain boots- nope, none of that in sight. Instead for us SoCal locals, we’re eating guavas, riding our bikes to the farmer’s markets and I’m still telling everyone to drink their sunscreen ;). Thankfully with equal parts sun and moon, we’re reminded to find that balance, possibly reassess or transform our thinking, launch a new project… And while everyone is talking about change, fall is an awesome time to simply reassure ourselves that the seeds we planted back in the spring are still worth working hard to harvest now that fall has arrived. If you’re here in SoCal, I’m helping keep life cool and immunity in-check at The Chalkboard Magazine next week during yet another wave of hot, high temps. Click over to …

Juli Novotny of Pure Mamas Emphasizes Protein During Gluten-Free Back-To-School Week

My {modest} and super smart friend Juli Novotny, “green chef”, about-to-be health-food book author and host of the popular modern parenting blog I contribute to, Pure Mamas is here today to share her thoughts on healthy proteins to snack on, plant-based foods and her easy recipe for melon slushy. We thought it would be valuable for readers to include her experience during gluten-free back-to-school week because so many parents struggle to include healthy protein sources for school lunches. We know that foods packaged as gluten-free are not always health foods, they just happen to not have gluten in them. And, since this post features Juli, you can be sure there there will only be fresh, whole foods mentioned to pop into kid’s school lunches instead of packaged chips and other prepared foods that parents succumb to when they’re in a rush. Juli is not your average bear- she knows a lot more about nutrition and wellness than she lets on! Read til the end and let us know what your kids think of the melon …
